Sunday 4th July – Ibbeth Peril – Bull Pot of the Witches

Present - Nigel, George, Sooty

As usual an e-mail from the gang – George and I are taking that reporter to Ibbeth Peril and you will come won’t you, ‘cause Tim is still grounded and Paul has not replaced his missing wellie yet (?). PS can you think of a wet weather alternative?

Up to this point I had been working on the antipodean excuse of visiting old friends, but they wanted an early start for Heathrow and then George’s lamp failed: “Can you fix it and bring it along on Sunday if I deliver to your home?” So that was Saturday booked as well.

Go on then. I will bring a ladder and we can rig IB2 (some locals had shown us the camouflaged entrance1 when we visited IB1 last year) and then attempt the connection…..

The lamp problem was simple, two corroded connections in the battery pack, and as there was no communication from the reporter the venue was changed to BPoW which none of us had done. Only problem is that the guide book description is not one of the clearest and your authors memories of the last visit to Bull Pot Farm have not faded yet.

We arrived after a couple of downpours had turned the path down the field into a stream, tackled up and had a quick read of the much clearer description that Richard had found2.

The scramble down to the recommended entrance was very slimy and it was a relief to get into the passage out of the summer weather. We agreed to rig the chimney climb and easily dropped down to South Chamber where we stashed the gear, had a look at the full waterfall, then did the crawl through to Chamber 32 which starts at the bottom of the entrance climb. While Sooty did his usual bit I went to look at the way on through the boulders at the far end, it looked a bit of a one way slide and as the hangover was starting to catch up I passed. We returned to the main open pot and after a quick read of the words set off following the stream down through the north chamber to the T- junction just after Richards
